4×4 Self-drive Tours
There is no better way to experience Africa than on your own terms, at your own pace, in your own 4×4. A self-drive tour puts you in complete control — you decide when to stop, when to push further, when to linger at a watering hole for another hour because what you’re watching is simply too extraordinary to leave. African Gear Guide’s 4×4 self-drive tours are designed for independent travellers who want the freedom of solo exploration with the confidence of expert support behind them every kilometre of the way. Our routes traverse some of the most spectacular and remote terrain on the continent — from the ancient red dunes of the Kalahari to the floodplains of the Okavango Delta, from the rugged escarpments of the Drakensberg to the baobab-lined tracks of Mozambique’s coastline. Each route is carefully researched, GPS-mapped, and updated seasonally to reflect current road and border conditions. You’ll receive a comprehensive route pack before departure with everything you need to navigate confidently, even in areas with no cell signal.Drive where there are no signs, sleep where there are no fences, and wake up to a continent that has been doing things its own way for a hundred million years. This is Africa by 4×4.
What’s included in your African Gear Guide 4×4 self-drive package: a fully serviced and equipped 4×4 vehicle with dual-battery system, rooftop tent or camping configuration, recovery gear (high-lift jack, sand tracks, tow rope, shovel), a Garmin GPS pre-loaded with your route and waypoints, satellite communicator for emergency contact beyond cell coverage, and 24/7 support from our team reachable via satellite. You’ll also receive a detailed destination guide for each overnight stop — recommended campsites, fuel stops, water points, and local tips collected from our own experience on the ground.
To get the most out of your self-drive experience, we recommend a minimum of one year’s offroad driving experience and comfort with basic vehicle recovery techniques. Our recommended travel period is May through September — the dry season across most of Southern Africa — when tracks are at their most accessible and wildlife congregates around permanent water sources. Tours are available for solo travellers, couples, and small convoys. All itineraries are customisable. Contact us to discuss your route, travel dates, and any specific requirements.
